Find Your Way with a Map and Compass

The Compass Hunt is an outdoor adventure where the team learns the timeless art of navigating with a map and compass—a simple, reliable method that always works, even when GPS, cell service, and battery power fail.

You’ll be introduced to the map’s structure, symbols, and scale, and you’ll learn how to orient the map correctly using a compass, take bearings, and plan a route. The course combines theory and practice. You’ll solve specific navigation tasks and find your own way across the terrain.

It’s not about being the fastest, but about learning together. Along the way, different skills come into play: the person who reads the map, the person who keeps the team on course, and the person who helps the team make decisions together. The goal is for you to walk away with the confidence to navigate on your own.

How it works

You’ll meet outdoors, where the instructors will be waiting for you. After a thorough introduction to maps, compasses, and bearings, you’ll start navigating the terrain. You’ll work your way from point to point, solving small navigation challenges along the way—and helping each other along the way. The pace and difficulty level are tailored to the group so that everyone can participate.

You'll learn that as you go along

  • Map Structure, Symbols, and Scale
  • Orienting the Map Correctly
  • Using a Compass and Taking Bearings
  • Longitude and latitude, directions, and cardinal points
  • Route Planning and Practical Navigation Techniques in the Field
  • Finding your way without a GPS or cell phone

Would you like some more?
